A major trend in food and grocery supply chains is the development of next-generation fulfillment networks designed to accelerate delivery, improve inventory efficiency, and support omnichannel shopping. However, the trend is broader than simply building new fulfillment centers. Leading retailers are combining advanced automation, artificial intelligence, strategically located distribution facilities, and existing stores to fulfill orders faster and more profitably.

Take Walmart, for example. Walmart recently opened its fifth next-generation fulfillment center, a more than 900,000-square-foot facility in Stockton, CA, that will expand the retailer’s ability to provide faster shipping and delivery to customers across California and the West Coast. Walmart describes itself as “a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer dedicated to helping people save money and live better.” Walmart is a member of Food Shippers of America (FSA).

Walmart’s new fulfillment center represents another step in modernizing its supply chain through advanced automation, technology, and machine learning. Strategically located in California’s Central Valley, the facility significantly increases storage capacity and daily order fulfillment capabilities while positioning inventory closer to West Coast customers, enabling faster shipping on millions of products and strengthening Walmart’s broader distribution network.

Increased Order Capacity, Faster Shipping

The facility’s automated, high-density storage and retrieval system delivers products directly to associates, streamlining the traditional 12-step fulfillment process to just five steps. By eliminating repetitive manual tasks, the technology improves operational efficiency while enabling associates to focus on higher-value activities.

“Stockton represents what we mean when we say Walmart is people-led and tech-powered,” says Karisa Sprague, Senior Vice President, Fulfillment Operations, Walmart U.S. “We’re bringing together associates with advanced technology and automation to create a safer, more efficient operation that can fulfill more orders and get products to customers faster. This facility is an important investment in the Central Valley and a critical part of how we’re building the next generation of Walmart’s fulfillment network across the West Coast.”

Combined with the rest of Walmart’s fulfillment network, these next-generation fulfillment centers will enable the retailer to reach 95% of the U.S. population faster. Walmart Fulfillment Services, Walmart’s end-to-end third-party fulfillment service, will also leverage the space to fulfill third-party Marketplace items.

New Career Opportunities

Additional benefits of the advanced technology include new career pathways – and job comfort – for associates. The Stockton fulfillment center will be home to more than 1,000 Walmart associates. The retailer is continuing to hire a variety of positions, including tech-focused jobs, as operations continue to ramp.

“This facility is about more than the technology inside the building — it’s about the people who bring it to life every day,” says Dean Yoder, General Manager, Walmart Fulfillment Center. “We’re building a team of more than 1,000 associates here in Stockton, with opportunities to develop new skills, work with advanced technology and build long-term careers at Walmart.”

Walmart currently employs over 102,900 associates in California, and supports local business across the state, spending $36.5 billion with California suppliers in 2025 and supporting 310,304 California supplier jobs. Walmart serves California customers at more than 300 stores, clubs, and supply chain facilities, and online through Walmart.com.

Future of Fulfillment: Speed, Efficiency, and Supply Chain Collaboration

Walmart's investment in next-generation fulfillment reflects a broader transformation underway across retail supply chains, where speed, automation, inventory visibility and strategic distribution networks are becoming increasingly important competitive differentiators. As consumers demand greater flexibility in how and when they receive products, retailers are rethinking traditional fulfillment models to better integrate e-commerce, physical stores and distribution operations.

For food shippers and their logistics partners, this evolution underscores the growing importance of responsive transportation networks, strategically positioned inventory and technology-enabled supply chain operations. While advanced automation can improve fulfillment efficiency, delivering a seamless omnichannel experience ultimately requires close collaboration among manufacturers, retailers, carriers and logistics providers. Walmart's latest investment illustrates how fulfillment strategies are evolving to meet changing customer expectations while balancing speed, operational efficiency and scalability.
