Seen & Heard at the 2026 Annual FSA Conference

The conversations at this year’s Food Shippers of America Conference highlighted something many in the industry are already sensing…food supply chains are entering a new phase. The challenges facing shippers today extend beyond rates and capacity, and leaders across the industry are navigating three defining forces shaping this next phase of logistics: the rise of generative AI, the escalation of cargo fraud and theft, and a freight market approaching a major shift.
It was interesting to hear these industry professionals speak on these topics as they closely align with what we’ve outlined in our 2026 Market Forecast. The takeaway is clear: the companies that succeed in the coming cycle will be those that prepare early and operate with smarter intelligence across their supply chains.
AI as the Next Productivity Multiplier
One compelling session focused on “Unleashing Productivity with Generative AI: A Leadership Imperative.” While AI is often framed as a futuristic disruption, the real opportunity is in the practical productivity that can be achieved immediately.
In logistics, generative AI can assist with tasks like carrier communication, shipment exception management, document processing, and forecasting demand patterns. For food shippers operating with tight delivery windows and strict compliance standards, these tools can help teams move faster and make smarter decisions.
AI isn’t going to replace experienced logistics professionals, but it will increasingly amplify their ability to manage complexity and respond quickly to changing conditions. In a market where speed and accuracy matter, AI has already become a competitive advantage.
Fraud and Cargo Theft: A Growing Risk
Sessions at the conference that focused on fraud and cargo theft underscored a challenge that has grown rapidly across the freight industry. Organized criminal networks are increasingly targeting high-value freight, and at the top of that list are food, produce, and protein shipments, using tactics such as identity theft, fictitious pickups, and double brokering.
DLX’s market research reflects the severity of this trend like cargo crimes significantly rising in recent years, with estimated stolen value and associated losses reaching $725 million in 2025 and sophisticated fraud schemes continuing to increase.
For shippers, the consequences extend beyond the cost of stolen freight. Retailer chargebacks, replacement product costs, and lost shelf space multiplies the impact. Now, more than ever, continuous carrier vetting and monitoring are essential disciplines, rather than one-time onboarding checks.
A Freight Market Nearing an Inflection Point
Another key discussion came during the Transportation Outlook session with Eric Starks, which reinforced the idea that the freight market may be nearing a turning point.
After a prolonged freight recession marked by suppressed rates and excess capacity, several structural forces are beginning to tighten the market. Regulatory enforcement, financial pressure on carriers, and changing safety standards could remove a meaningful portion of driver capacity in the coming years. DLX analysis suggests hundreds of thousands of drivers could exit the market, tightening capacity and putting upward pressure on rates.
The Power of Strategic Logistics Partnerships
If there was a unifying theme across the conference, it was collaboration. The message of “Strategic Partnerships” reflects an industry reality: food supply chains function best when shippers, carriers, and logistics partners operate as a coordinated network.
The next freight cycle will reward organizations that combine strong partnerships, modern technology, and disciplined risk management.
In the changing world of food logistics, the companies that prepare together will ultimately win together.
