The Aftermath of Hurricane Ian: Transportation and Logistics

Trucking companies and logistics providers continue their work to restore service after Hurricane Ian ripped through Florida last week, significantly diminishing transportation, logistics and delivery operations.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida last Wednesday, resulting in massive devastation in the southwest portion of the state and killing at least 101 people. As the state shifts into recovery mode, Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) resumed normal operations Saturday and parcel carriers UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) have been gradually resuming service in parts of the state affected most by the storm.

Kathy Fulton“While supply chain and logistics professionals may not have the medical skills of a first responder or the construction expertise of a rebuilding crew, there’s a lot that our trucks, warehouses, material handling equipment, expertise, hands and funding can do to pave the way for meaningful relief and recovery efforts," says Kathy Fulton, Executive Director of American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN), an industry disaster relief organization that is supported significantly by Food Shippers of America (FSA). “And aren’t we fortunate to be part of an industry that can play such a meaningful role?”

“Start by doing what’s necessary, then by doing what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible,” adds Fulton. Earlier last month, ALAN provided FSA with fair warning about the pending hurricane season.
