Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving beyond experimentation and becoming a tool for generating measurable efficiencies across the food supply chain.

Sysco Corp., one of the world's largest foodservice distributors and a member of Food Shippers of America (FSA), has announced a multi-year AI-powered efficiency program expected to generate at least $500 million in savings by fiscal 2029. The initiative will reach across the company's operations, including transportation routing, warehouse productivity, merchandising, procurement and customer service.

For transportation and supply chain professionals, one of the most significant components involves supply chain productivity. Sysco plans to modernize routing software, improve warehouse selector efficiency and reduce miles driven as part of the initiative.

Kevin-Hourican-300x300"We finished fiscal 2026 with momentum, and that momentum has carried into the new year," says Kevin Hourican, Sysco's Chair of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. "The $500 million of AI powered efficiency improvement will deploy over the next three years. These savings reflect a durable change in how we execute our day-to-day business across truck routing, merchandising, and sales."

The scale of Sysco's operation makes even incremental improvements potentially significant. The company operates 333 distribution centers across 10 countries, with approximately 75,000 employees serving about 670,000 customer locations. Sysco generated more than $84 billion in sales during fiscal 2026.

AI Moves Deeper Into the Supply Chain

Sysco's initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence increasingly is being integrated into everyday food distribution operations rather than treated simply as an emerging technology.

The company's AI and technology transformation is organized around several major workstreams. In addition to routing modernization, warehouse productivity and mileage reduction, Sysco plans to use automation across merchandising and procurement, including strategic sourcing. Other priorities include indirect spend management and simplifying customer experience and back-office processes.

The company already expects $100 million in net cost savings during fiscal 2027 from AI- and technology-enabled efficiency initiatives. Those savings are expected to build over the following two years toward the company's $500 million target.

Sysco also tied the transformation to its longer-term financial expectations. The company increased its fiscal 2028 and 2029 annualized net sales growth target to approximately 4% to 7%, up from its previous 4% to 6% range. Its annualized adjusted earnings-per-share growth target increased from 6% to 8% to approximately 9% to 11%.

From Technology Investment to Competitive Advantage

For food shippers, Sysco's strategy illustrates a broader shift taking place throughout transportation and logistics: technology investments increasingly are being measured by their ability to produce tangible operational results.

Smarter routing can reduce unnecessary mileage and transportation costs. Better warehouse productivity can increase throughput. Automation can simplify procurement and administrative processes. And when these improvements are deployed across a distribution network as large as Sysco's, relatively small gains at individual locations can translate into substantial network-wide efficiencies.

Hourican says Sysco's technology transformation is intended to strengthen customer service while improving the company's earnings profile.

For an industry continually challenged to balance service expectations with transportation costs, labor availability and operating efficiency, Sysco's $500 million initiative offers another indication that AI is rapidly becoming less about what the technology can do — and more about the measurable value it can create throughout the food supply chain.
